Thinking About Your Breasts? Dr. Zweifler Gives You the Lo-Down!
Today, we have many options for our breasts. In addition to good push up bras, silicone implants are back on the market. Both saline and silicone gel filled implants are available for breast enhancement. The implants come in many sizes but final size is largely determined by your body proportions and desires. Of course realistic expectations are a must!
Where it's placed, matters.
Implants may be placed behind or above the pectoralis muscle. Subglandular augmentation (above the muscle) gives natural lower breast yet you need sufficient tissue present to minimize feeling the implant edge or rippling. Submuscular implants (behind the muscle) give more upper breast tissue (at times the "implant look") and minimize some of the capsule formation and rippling. FYI - You'll need special mammograms after your breast implants.
There are many different incisions for placing breast implants; around the nipple-areolar, the inframammary fold (under the breast fold), transaxillary (under the arm pit), and transumbilical (thru the belly button). Each has advantages and disadvantages that you and your surgeon need to communicate preoperatively.
Need a lift?
At times, implants alone achieve the desired shape, contour, and even lift the breast. Other times, implants and a mastopexy (breast lift) are performed simultaneously or as a staged procedure to get the breast enhancement. The lift helps raise the lowered nipple with incisions either just around the nipple-areolar complex, a vertical/ lollipop scar, or an inverted "T" anchor scar. The mastopexy technique is largely determined by your degree of ptosis (breast sagging). These breast lift techniques are also used without implants in women with enough breast volume.
